The repertoire sung by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau during his career spanning many decades encompasses numerous opera roles, oratorios, and of course countless songs; hardly any other singer might hope to match him in the fields of variety and versatility. Judged by the overall repertoire available to any given singer, Heinrich Schütz’s oeuvre for Fischer-Dieskau’s voice type is relatively small. And yet these compositions offer this singer a special opportunity to realize his vocalist’s ideal vision of the balance between musical utterance and language. The release of these radio recordings from the 1950s with works by Schütz can thus hardly be ranked highly enough; they vividly convey the characteristic traits of the young Fischer-Dieskau’s voice and recital style.
