The news went around the world: Pietari Inkinen will be responsible for the new production of the "Ring of the Nibelung" at the Bayreuth Festival in 2020. But before that happens, the Finn impresses with the continuation of the Dvořák cycle of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, of which he is chief conductor. He takes over the baton from his predecessor Karel Mark Chichon and begins with Antonín Dvořák's Second Symphony, which Inkinen gives an almost dance-like, light and fresh treatment. The 24-year-old Dvořák's Second Symphony could not be a mature masterpiece, nor is it in its revised form; but it is an extraordinary test of talent, as the composer already reveals his own hand-writing through the powerful models. "This guy has more ideas than all of us", Brahms said approvingly. This can also be heard in this 2nd Symphony! The program is complemented by two overtures that represent the "mature" master Dvořák. The Deutsche Radio Philharmonie plays on the edge of its seat under Inkinen and shows in this recording how excellent the chemistry between the orchestra and its chief conductor seems to be. A wonderful recording of a widely underrated work!
