This fifth installment of the Michael Gielen EDITION contains works by Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky. Gielen greatly admired these composers, whose works he frequently performed. We thus continue the editorial plan for the Michael Gielen EDITION. Volume 5 includes many first releases or recordings of Gielen from the 1960s and 1970s. Michael Gielen is celebrating his 90th birthday in July 2017. Numerous outstanding soloists and singers are featured. The release also contains a spoken section from Michael Gielen's last concert with his SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg in 2014. A comprehensive and detailed booklet containing texts of the vocal works is included.
This fifth installment of the Michael Gielen EDITION is dedicated to works by Béla Bartók and Igor Stravinsky. It includes all the recordings released between 2005 and 2008 as four single CDs on SWR music; also Stravinsky’s Scherzo à la Russe, which was part of an SWR music compilation in 2002.
Additionally, there are newly released, historic performances from the 1960s and 1970s, recorded in Saarbrücken and Stuttgart. Among these is Stravinsky’s complete Pulcinella music with vocals, taken from the same concert as Mozart’s Thamos, which forms part of the first volume of the Michael Gielen EDITION. Stravinsky’s Variations were performed at Gielen’s last concert in Freiburg in 2014, when the maestro personally introduced this extraordinary piece to the audience. His short and entertaining introduction is on CD 5, track 35; the English transcription is in the liner notes.
Michael Gielen considers Stravinsky “among the great masters of the 20th century“. Also Bartók. Heard here in a radiant recording from 2007, Gielen said of his Miraculous Mandarin: “Simply wonderful (…) with traces of impressionism, but already composed in the spirit of expressionism, a miracle of colours…”
