This 8th installment of SWR Classic’s Michael Gielen EDITION comprises what is held to be the conductor’s core repertoire, namely works by Schönberg, Berg and Webern. Most of the recordings have never been previously released. Vols. 1-7 of the Michael Gielen EDITION have been critically acclaimed worldwide.
With the 8th volume of the Michael Gielen EDITION we have come to what is generally considered to be the conductor's core repertoire. Gielen himself, however, thought this view inappropriate and always defended himself against being labeled in this way. Indeed, the previous volumes in our edition show that his competence was clearly much more comprehensive.
All but four of the recordings presented here are from the archives of the broadcasting corporations SWR Baden-Baden and SWR Stuttgart. In addition to some re-releases of recordings (previously released under the labels Intercord and SWR music/hänssler CLASSIC), this volume once more offers a number of first releases.
