It is the task of this first edition of the majority of Hans Rosbaud's recordings with the former symphony orchestra of the Südwestfunk in Baden-Baden - his main instrument from 1948 until his death, which he meticulously rehearsed to form one of the best European orchestras of the 1950s - to contribute to Hans Rosbaud's name finally being reco-gnized, more than half a century after his death, as one of the great maestros of his time, in keeping with his excep-tional artistic status. The fact that most of his numerous radio recordings were hardly known beyond the circle of local south-west German radio listeners meant that some clichés about his music-making, which were of course already in circulation during his lifetime, became all the more stubbornly entrenched. He was regarded as a conduc-tor of the "new objectivity" and stylized as an anti-romantic icon, using his undoubted authority and integrity as a much-needed counterpart to the commercial sound fetishism of Herbert von Karajan and the routine idolization of Karl Böhm. In Hans Rosbaud, however, the highest musical capacity and genuine personal modesty were combined! The two Schumann symphonies are late recordings: the Spring Symphony was made in September 1960, the Fourth in December 1961. Everything is very clear and unpretentious and filled with warmth and fragile intimacy. All three of Schumann's solo concertos are available in very different recordings, and here one can hear above all how selflessly Rosbaud was able to adapt to the soloist without denying himself.
