Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 d minor

During the past decade, Roger Norrington has left an extraordinary legacy, recording the major 19th century symphonic literature. Together with the RSO, Norrington has artfully adapted the Historically Informed Performance style to the sonic possibilities of a modern symphony orchestra. In addition to various Mahler symphonies, Norrington has to date released a series of acclaimed Bruckner performances on CD. Norrington's approach is refreshing, relieving the master of his near beatific status to give him a human face and locate him squarely in the contentious climate of Fin-de-siècle Vienna and the Musikverein. With this in mind, while Bruckner did inscribe his last symphony 'dem lieben Gott gewidmet', Norrington's fresh approach injects a healthy dose of 'worldliness'.
