Tr. 2 Wolfgang Rihm: Coll' Arco 4. Musik for Violin and Orchestra
To date, five volumes have been released documenting the extraordinary and influential orchestral music of Karlsruhe native, Wolfgang Rihm. Both concertos featured on this disc focus on Rihm's exceptional gift for creating flowing cantabile melodies. 'Coll'Arco' (the fourth Music for Violin and Orchestra) was composed in 2008 and is conceived as a vocal scene and performed by the work's dedicatee, Caroline Widmann. Her brother Jörg Widmann is not only himself a highly respected contemporary composer, he is also an extraordinary clarinetist. Composed in 1999 as 'Über die Linie II - Music for Clarinet and Orchestra” Rihm crafts a nearly 40 minute cantilena, that builds upon the honored traditions of Mozart and Brahms while being something completely new.
