The youngGreek pianist Nikolas Anadolis, 2010 winner of the Concours Martial Solal in Paris, has made an impressive statement with his Piano Trio. Live Recording from the Enjoy JazzFestival in Heidelberg on October 13t2014.

Experts read in a biography a name like Fred Hersch, who taught Nikolas Anadolis at Berklee for a while, and are in the know. Surely this must be the reason that the young man from Thessaloniki can slip into music so empathetically, view melodies almos tfrom the inside out.

The runs surge and bubble, as if a force had to make its way along a path that was previously hidden. A Fred Hersch would never have done that in this form. Though Anadolis does not reinvent the piano trio, he does give it a freshness and vitality as if it had only just been hatched from the egg.

Thes mall-scale form of the trio has from the beginning been one of Anadolis’ preferred options. When in 2010, still a teenager(Anadolis was born in 1991), he won the Concours Martial Solal in Paris ,one of the most important European jazz competitions, he had no reservations about going on stage with the experienced Moutin brothers. And again, for his concert at the Enjoy Jazz Festival on October 13, 2014, he chose in the French bassist Simon Tallieu and the Cologne drummer Jonas Burgwinkel a no less fascinating team of trenchant sound space designers.

In a sense, Anadolis makes this easy for his bandmates. Even as a composer, he follows the idea of a breathing music that is based on the harmony of its elements.
